Early stages
After looking through multiple forum posts, I linked common words together to create a flowing metric pattern. These words became the basis to my first chorus, with the key of D major suiting the overall mood.

Change of perspective
After writing my first chorus, I decided that first person perspective wasn’t relatable enough for a wider audience. Whilst we may not all be scientists, we are working together as a global community to do our part and reduce the transmission of this virus. The new chorus reflects this below:

Adding verses
After coming up with a catchy chorus, it was time to start adding verses. Struggling to come up with concepts, I went back to the forum and noticed different perspectives in the group. Some members were focused on the scientific reasoning behind our actions, others were taking interest in new found hobbies and a majority were thankful for the front line workers. This gave me some guidance into how to approach each verse but also motivated me to write from my own perspective as well.

Realisation
After seeking feedback from my mentor, I realised that I wasn’t using enough of my own voice in the songwriting process. Having to start again from scratch was hard but I knew it was going to be worth it in the long run. It took me a while to discover what I wanted from this process. Was it to educate? Or rather inspire? Fortunately, I discovered the answers to these questions on a walk around my local neighbourhood. Seeing local children’s chalk creations gave me a completely new perspective of COVID.
